UK dental education - the role & responsibilities of GDC
It is the responsibility of GDC (General Dental Council) to set rules and essentials for UK dental education whether it is undergraduate dental education or it is postgraduate dental education. The requirements of GDC are published to explain the scope of different programs such as dental doctor courses, dental nursing courses, dental therapy, dental hygiene & more.

No dental course can be initiated or offered without the consent of the General Dental Council. If a private dental school offers a dental degree program which is not GDC-approved, it has no legal value at all.

BDS Dentistry
BDS is a five-year dental degree program that covers three foundation units:

Scientific Teaching Unit
​
Technical Teaching Unit
​
Clinical Teaching Unit
The first year of BDS dentistry degree program is all about scientific dental teachings. In your first year, you will be able to develop introductory professional skills.

The second year of the dental degree program will help you develop clinical skills such as how to deal with the patients.
The third-year will be about achieving an Honors BSC or BA. The final year will take you abroad for dental research or you will stay in the UK for supervised dental clinical activities.
The importance of physical fitness
In order to be part of the dentistry course or join dentistry as a career, you also need to be physically fit by meeting some certain health conditions. Your blood will be taken and examined in one of the authorized labs by GDC to make sure that you are free from all the viruses.
One thing more, you have to answer a questionnaire to assess your current health condition. These two testes – blood screening and health assessment questionnaire – are aimed to make sure that you are not going to create health threats or risks for the patients once you have completed the course.
